The Gambia Immigration Department and Gambia International Fashion Week Explore a Strategic Partnership to Promote Safe Migration and Opportunities for Young People
Banjul, The Gambia | 22 October 2026
The Gambia Immigration Department (GID) has expressed interest in establishing a collaborative partnership with Gambia International Fashion Week, with the shared objective of promoting safe and regular migration while creating new opportunities for young Gambians within the creative industries.
The discussions mark a significant opportunity to bring together institutional engagement, fashion, cultural expression and youth empowerment, positioning the creative economy as a potential avenue for professional development and international engagement.
During the meetings, Ismaila Jallow, founder of Gambia International Fashion Week, shared his personal experiences of migration, including the period he spent in Italy. Drawing on these experiences, he expressed his ambition to establish a platform through which young Gambians could access opportunities in fashion, entertainment and other creative sectors, while raising awareness of the significant risks that irregular migration continues to pose to younger generations.
Jallow called for institutional support to help young Gambians pursue their ambitions and transform their talents into viable professional opportunities. He emphasised the potential of the platform to showcase Gambian creativity on the international stage, attract foreign direct investment and encourage multinational companies to consider The Gambia as an attractive destination for investment.
He also urged the government to facilitate young Gambians' access to international markets and provide support in navigating the legal procedures required to pursue employment opportunities abroad.
The Director General of the Gambia Immigration Department, Ebrima Mboob, welcomed the initiative and reaffirmed the Department's commitment to working with a range of partners to promote safe and regular migration while supporting the empowerment, professional development and growth of young people.
He further stressed that discussions on migration should address a broader spectrum of issues, extending beyond irregular migration to include support for individuals who may require assistance in their destination countries.
The Director General also highlighted the importance of providing accurate, accessible information on migration pathways and strengthening cooperation among relevant stakeholders, enabling individuals to make informed decisions about their future.
These discussions underscore the potential of a partnership that brings together migration awareness, talent development, international market access and the creation of safe, regular pathways through which young people can pursue their aspirations.
At the intersection of fashion, public engagement and international opportunity, the proposed collaboration offers a vision in which Gambian talent can gain greater visibility, creative industries can contribute to economic development, and informed migration choices can become an integral part of youth empowerment.
For The Gambia, the initiative presents an opportunity to connect local talent with global markets while advancing a broader conversation about mobility, opportunity, responsibility and the future of Africa's creative generations.
