SPECIAL BOXE - THE SPORT THAT KNOCKS OUT BARRIERS
From Florence to the World: Simone Vannuzzi's Vision for Inclusive Boxing
A new sporting discipline is redefining inclusion, dignity and hope.
By Amedee Martin Mieke
Florence, cradle of the Renaissance, is once again becoming the birthplace of an innovation destined to inspire the world. This time it is not a masterpiece of art or architecture, but a revolutionary sporting project: Special Boxe, an inclusive form of boxing designed for athletes with disabilities, including wheelchair users, where determination, technique and human dignity prevail over physical limitations.
At the heart of this project stands Simone Vannuzzi, former professional boxer, Italian Over-50 Champion and Federal Coach of the Italian Boxing Federation (FPI). His vision is transforming boxing into an instrument of rehabilitation, social inclusion and personal empowerment.
Supported by the Municipality of Florence, which has provided a dedicated training facility, the project is becoming a national model of sport serving the community.
Beyond Competition: A New Philosophy of Sport
Special Boxe is not about violence.
It is not about knockouts.
It is not about defeating an opponent.
It is about defeating fear, prejudice and exclusion.
Athletes train in complete safety through controlled technical exercises that enhance coordination, confidence, concentration, reaction speed and self-esteem.
Every punch delivered from a wheelchair sends a powerful message:
Disability does not define ability.
The Story of Giuseppe Mondello
On June 5, at the Mario D'Agata Memorial in Sesto Fiorentino, history was made.
For the first time in Italy, Giuseppe Mondello, an athlete with disabilities classified by the Italian Boxing Federation and trained by Simone Vannuzzi at ASD Dinamika Special Boxe, entered the ring for an official exhibition match against an able-bodied amateur boxer.
The event demonstrated that inclusion is not a slogan but a reality built through preparation, courage and opportunity.
The audience did not witness a fight.
They witnessed hope.
A Gym That Changes Lives
Every training session is free of charge.
For Simone Vannuzzi, coaching is not a profession alone.
It is a social mission.
Among his athletes are people living with spinal cord injuries, Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, traumatic brain injuries and other neurological conditions.
Many have regained mobility, coordination and confidence.
Every smile is a victory.
Every movement recovered is a medal.
Every athlete becomes an ambassador of resilience.
Numbers That Demand Action
According to available statistics, only about 9% of people with disabilities regularly participate in sports, compared with more than one-third of the general population.
Only one in three students with disabilities takes part in school trips or extracurricular activities.
Sport changes these numbers.
It improves physical health, mental well-being, independence and social participation.
Special Boxe represents one more opportunity to ensure that nobody is left behind.
Florence Looks Toward the Paralympic Future
The Italian Boxing Federation is promoting the development of this discipline with the ambition of seeing boxing included in future Paralympic Games.
Florence has already become one of the first laboratories of this vision.
The dream is clear:
To create the first competitive team of Special Boxe athletes capable of representing Italy on the international stage.
A Universal Message
This project reminds us that inclusion begins when society creates opportunities.
When institutions, coaches, families and communities work together, disability no longer becomes a limit but another expression of human potential.
Special Boxe is more than a sport.
It is a movement.
It is education.
It is rehabilitation.
It is dignity.
Above all, it is hope.
